Avandia - Fri, Feb 19, 2010 -- Two officials from the Food and Drug Administration are recommending that diabetes drug Avandia be pulled from the market because of its potential to harm the heart, the New York Times reports. Agency reports suggest that if every diabetic taking Avandia switched to a different medication, about 500 heart attacks would be averted each month. And in the third quarter of 2009, Avandia was linked to 304 deaths, the Times reports. Avandia's heart risks came to light following a 2007 study by the Cleveland Clinic, but later studies failed to show a definitive link. Avandia - Wed, Feb 3, 2010 -- Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline is about to suffer more setbacks in the ongoing battle of opinions concerning the safety of its much touted diabetes drug Avandia. The American Diabetes Association has accepted for publication in its prestigious medical journal, Diabetes Care, a study by Harvard researchers that shows users of the diabetes drug Avandia have more than double the risk of a heart attack compared to other diabetes drugs. Further, a jointly sponsored study by both GlaxoSmithKline and i3 Drug Safety, an independent drug-safety firm, will appear in the journal Clinical Therapeutics showing that Avandia users have a 35-41% increased risk of a heart attack over users of Actos, Avandia's main competitor.read the entire story
